About The Bird

Hi, I’m Rachelle — the hands behind the stitching, the fabric hoarder, the one who still gets excited when a new stack of cotton arrives in the mail.

Every piece you see here is something I’ve made with intention, a little creativity, and usually a strong cup of coffee nearby. I love making things that are not only useful, but a little bit joyful too — book sleeves to protect your latest read, totes to carry all the things, aprons for messes made with love, and cozy little bookmarks to tuck into your favorite pages.

So, what’s with the name?

My shop name is a tribute to someone very special — my mom, Shirley. She was the most creative, warm, and encouraging person I’ve ever known. I lost her to cancer in 2014, but I carry her spirit with me in every stitch I make. She was the one who taught me how much love could be poured into something handmade.

“Bird” was my nickname growing up — a little quirky, a little sweet, and totally fitting for someone who never liked to sit still for too long. So when it came time to name my shop, it only felt right to bring us together again — Shirley & Bird.

Handmade with Heart

This isn’t a mass-production kind of place. It’s just me — picking out fabrics, ironing seams, sewing edges, packaging your orders, and probably getting thread stuck to my sock somewhere along the way. Most items are made to order, which means every piece is created just for you, with care and attention to the details.

The book cover is really well sewn with high quality fabric. I got the medium which seems like it will fit most books that are average size. It stays on the book well, and I love the built in ribbon bookmark.

I searched for an item just like this because I always take the jackets off my books, but wanted something to protect my covers and add something fun. This is perfect. I messaged the seller to ask for a plain black inside and she very promptly answered that it would be no problem to switch the fabrics. I love that it includes a built in bookmark.

For those of you unsure on what size to get- the large fits Book of the Month club books, with some room to spare.
